Series Information:

One Piece (ワンピース Wan Pīsu) is a long-running shōnen manga written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda, that has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since August 4, 1997. The individual chapters are being published in tankōbon volumes by Shueisha, with the first released on December 24, 1997 and 53 volumes released as of March 4, 2009. One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy, who gained supernatural abilities by eating a magical fruit, and his ragtag crew of heroic pirates, named the Straw Hats. Luffy’s greatest ambition is to obtain the world’s ultimate treasure, One Piece, and thereby become the next King of the Pirates. When creating the series, Oda was heavily influenced by the manga Dragon Ball.

Eiichiro san (author) was an apprentice to Watsuki san (the guy responsible for Rurouni Kenshin) and it clearly shows in the series.

Theres just so much to say about One Piece I just dont know where to begin. First off, many people may be turned off by Eichiro Oda’s style of characters. When translated into anime, more people are just plainly confused. In my opinion, Oda’s style should be respected just as any other style of animation because if everyone just drew in similiar style, we’d get heck. Also, just as typical manga, Oda’s art really helps to make the characters feel more alive and entertaining.

S T O R Y:

The world in which One Piece is set is a totally fictions world where pirates are commonplace and every where you look is a wonderful land of fantasy. Now other than a pirate theme this doesn’t sound too original does it?! But there is something very different about the special powers element of One Piece. Rather than your usual mutations, or “chi” or whatever else you’re used to seeing in anime, One Piece has Devil Fruit! A fruit that gives the person who eats it a special ability and it’s this that gives the “fun” element to the anime and I bet there isn’t a person out there who hasn’t tried to think up their own devil fruit ability *lol*

A boy named Monkey D. Luffy, inspired by his childhood hero “Red-Haired” Shanks, sets out on a journey to find the legendary One Piece, to become the new Pirate King, and return the straw hat to Shanks because of his promise. To accomplish this, he must reach the end of the most deadly and dangerous ocean: The Grand Line. Luffy captains the Straw Hat Pirates first through the sea of East Blue and then through the Grand Line. He follows the path of the deceased Pirate King, Gold Roger, from island to island on his way to the great treasure One Piece. On his way his crew grows to have a swordsman, a navigator, a sniper, a cook, a doctor, an archaeologist, a shipwright, and a musician.

C H A R A C T E R:

The most important aspect of an anime of this nature and length are the characters and they are wonderful; every single character in One Piece oozes personality, charm and most importantly life! They’re imaginative, individual and wholly different from your usual anime fare. The bad guys are fantastically portrayed with just as much personality and charisma as the main characters.

The assortment of characters will never cease to amaze, or entertain with their antics.

Perfectly created characters and personalities. Richly made life stories that are told time and time again by the way they behave. There have all been times of joy and sadness in their lives and it shows in their wish to live life to the fullest. Random characters appearing on episodes are also well acted and scripted.

Monkey D. Luffy or Luffy ~ is a lovable character with many goofy faults, but those same faults making him adorable, such as being somewhat stupid. On the other hand, he’s completely loyal, absolutely an optimist and he believe in himself and his crew. He believes in dreams. He’s the kind of guy you look for in an anime of this nature; someone you know you can rely on to do the right thing all the way through. Someone who puts others before himself, who always has a righteous nature and even though he’s a glutton and seems totally unaware most of the time, he has to be one of the most endearing characters I have come across in a very long time. He’s the kind guy you know you can rely on when the time comes and his strength of body, mind and character is astounding. He has gone through a wonderful period of growth throughout the episodes I have seen and his antics never cease to amaze me.

“Pirate Hunter” Roronoa Zoro or  Zoro ~ is to be the coolest swordsman since Kenshin and my personal favorite, but that is because he is the walking embodiment of bushido. Although he has no sense of direction, he is very much the samurai to Luffy’s command. He is loyalty to the rest of the crew is something quite amazing, trustworthy, honest, and works hard to fulfill his promises. His prowess slowly builds up throughout the anime in a very believable way. He’s a bit of a strange guy who spends most of his time sleeping, or boozing.

Nami is the meanest mother hen. She is the only female for a long time, but she keeps the boys in line. She has a temper, and she loves money and tangerines. But under all of that she is loyal and pretty good at fighting.

Usopp! What can you say about Usopp?  He is the high comic relief because he is a liar and boaster. He’s also a dead eye shot with his sling shot. He is one of the most human of the characters, right there with Nami, and he’s best at escape. Clever and mechanical, He’s actually a lot cooler than you might imagine and as the anime goes on, he goes through an amazing period of growth, both in personality and strength and his prowess in the Water 7 arc impresses me every time I watch it.
There’s little funnier than his SogeKing persona. Usopp kicks butt!

Sanji
~ is a butt-kicking cook and a failed womanizer but that doesn’t stop him from being a force to be reckoned with. Using only his feet, he kicks serious ass. He loves the ladies, and never thinks twice about saving a damsel in distress he protects them at all costs. His rival for 2nd strongest on the ship is Zoro, and those two fight constantly. He is also one of the smartest guys on the ship. His constant swooning over the girls never fails to make me laugh, his skills as a number one chef never fails to impress.

Tony Tony Chopper
or Chopper (for short) ~ is so damned cute a strange little blue nosed reindeer that ate a human Devil’s Fruit (Human Human fruit) which gives him the ability to talk and transform. He has the most humility of any anime character I’ve ever seen and the fact he can’t accept compliments and his reactions to them are hilarious. His back story within the anime is one of the most emotional of the lot! He is the ship’s doctor, and he’s very skilled. The youngest, he is very naive… but always tries his best

Nico Robin or Robin ~ has the abilities of the Flower-Flower Fruit, allowing her to create copies of any of her body parts on any solid surface that she can see, such as her own body, on the bodies of others, on objects, or even the replicated limbs themselves. She is extremely intelligent, having taught herself archaeology and to decipher the extremely difficult Poneglyph language at a very young age. Her dream is to find and decipher the Rio Poneglyph, an ancient stone telling a long lost part of history (the Void Century), which is considered a crime against the World Government Her back-story is the most haunting and sad of anyone’s in One Piece and I cried a lot watching that section. Her life has been hell since she was a tiny girl and that makes it all the more saddening

There are others, but that would spoil it. I say, look at them all, because all the characters are wonderful!

To truly find out how wonderful the characters are, whether it be our heroes, or the numerous strange and enchanting villains, or the motley crew that tends to make up the guys from the marines, you need to watch this anime ^__^

Basically the characters make One Piece what it is. They give the whole thing a more enchanting feel and add so much to an already fantastic story

A N I M A T I O N/A R T:

Many people seem to strongly dislike the art style. Well, it’s not poorly drawn, it’s just DIFFERENT—something many anime fans aren’t used to and refuse to accept. It’s beautiful, and it makes the characters stand out. Backgrounds are also very nice.

While not amazing, One Piece’s animation more then just gets the job done. It lacks the computerized effects that many animes today use, but there isn’t really anything to complain about. I don’t think any long animes use high-end effects, and neither does this one. The animation is clean, colorful and lively, certainly enjoyable. All around great.

There isn’t really anything to complain about where the animation is concerned. Here we have a show that’s been going for 7 years and shows no signs of stopping even now! The animation slowly improves with each arc of the story and while at the beginning there may have been a more simplistic approach to the fight scenes, more recent episodes show how the presentation of the fights has improved; from Luffy’s amazing rubber “Gum Gum” attacks, to Zoro’s prowess with a sword.
The punch-ups are really well executed, although as with the majority of shounen anime of this nature, the injuries etc are gone within a very short time.

The backgrounds range from impressively detailed to quite simplistic, but always make for a perfect setting. The ships and various strange creatures are very individual and original and although the character design may take a little getting used to, the one thing you can say is how different and original everyone looks. I think the character design is one of the most refreshing aspects of One Piece, as it offers the viewer a wide range of the cute, the gorgeous, the strange and peculiar and the downright ugly!

As this is something that is currently on the almost 399 episode mark, being attracted to the characters visually is a very important aspect and whether you’re a guy or girl there is bound to be more than one character you can attach yourself too.

S O U N D:

A whole host of songs to get your teeth into, but nothing will be as special as the 1st Op theme (We Are!) which to me seems more like an anthem than just a plain old theme tune. The one thing that attracted me to One Piece in the first place is the wonderful uplifting 1st Op theme song and its wonderful animation credits. It’s full of life and wonderment. It’s almost matched by the 6th OP theme song “Brand New World”, this song just needed to last longer than it did!

Out of the 11 OP theme songs and 18 ED theme songs, there’s very little to complain about, the lyrics are wonderful and portray the wonder than is One Piece!

The BGM is wonderful. Most of it appears to be extremely well orchestrated pieces of music that at times sound like a huge orchestra was employed solely for the purpose of creating the atmosphere of the show and boy does it do a good job!
There are times when the original theme tune is used for more poignant moments in the show, which is why I think of it as an anthem rather than just a song!
The soundtracks to one piece are very quaint and appropriate when they need to be, similar to many an rpg game. The background music is good orchestral accompiament to what’s going on in the episode. The themes are one of the best things about the anime; it is a series that is actually worth buying the music soundtrack for.

The voice acting is part of what makes this anime so good. Voice actors can make or break a show and for One Piece they couldn’t have done a better job of portraying the characters personalities through their seiyuu; from the addictive laughter of Luffy, to the scaredy cat nature of Usopp, everyone sounds perfect.

E N J O Y M E N T:

There is a very strong theme and bond of camaraderie/friendship in this anime. The anime is very straightforward; one episode to another is basically the continuation of the prior episode’s journey. Its just one long great adventure as various people gather together to fulfill their dreams. Although the fighting isn’t exactly the most intense part, especially compared to a lot of other great fighting anime, it serves its purpose as being a good accessory to the storyline. They slowly bring out new fighting skills, but more impressively is how many people they end up befriending despite being pirates!

One Piece’s story is set up in different arcs. Each arc presents a brand new situation, and the anime always stays fresh. The arcs keep getting better and better, as well. One Piece is EXTREMELY intense, and takes full control over your emotions. Although I am male, I do admit to crying during animes: (I miss Merry). I’m not really that emotional, but it does happen.

One of the most unique parts of the animes is the vast arrays of bad guys, good guys, and neutrals. This anime does not depend on the usual black/white bad/guy distinction. In general, anybody you see on the screen could have been potentially “good”. Only, their dreams, ambitions, and greed reflect upon their character and actions. Luffy and Gang revolutionize what being a pirate is - rather than just plundering and looting innocents - they seek to realize their childhood dreams.

O V E R A L L:

Of all the anime that I have seen, One Piece is the one that most deserves to be called an adventure story. The tale itself is epic, and the scope of the journey is magnificent. The characters and setting have captured my imagination and interest more-so than any other anime before and after it.

One Piece is an anime I recommend whole-heartedly to any anime fan, whether you enjoy long series or not. Unlike many other long running series, One Piece just continues getting better as it goes on. Every week, it is a joy to look forward to what will happen next in this story.

La Corda D’Oro… One would think that watching an anime series whose main plot involves kids who play classical music would be a flop, but in this anime’s case, it works and very shockingly well at that. Who’d have thought?
The story starts off where the main character, Hino Kahoko, is given a magical violin from a small cutesy magical fairy creature named Lilli in order to spread the love of music through entering a competition… I’ll admit, I was thinking about hitting the stop button right there based on how cheesey and girly the whole thing seemed. It sounded just like something straight out of a fairytale. But it only takes a few more minutes until you realize that this really is NOT just some magical girl anime. As a matter of fact it really isn’t one at all.
Hino Kahoko was really just an ordinary gen-ed student who was minding her own business until Lilli came along. During the course of the competition she meets many new people, people who she never would have talked to if it weren’t for her newly found ‘talent’ with the violin, and she begins to see life from a different perspective as she learns about their struggles, their lives, and why music is just so important to everyone of them. After listening to such things, you’d be hard pressed NOT to find your new appreciation for music afterwards as the things the characters do and say really manages to move you towards actually wanting to hear the pieces they play throughout the competition and you’ll find yourself genuinely enjoying their performances and being confused as to who you even want to win the competition. You’ll get caught up in Hino’s struggles so fast that you yourself start to sympathize with her own clonflicting emotions.
The art in La Corda D’Oro is amazing. The characters look gorgeous in almost every screen shot. It’s hard to find one character without an appealing character design in this anime. I found myself ecstatic when I saw that this is one of the few anime that actually goes out of it’s way to animate the movements of the characters as they play their instruments. You’ll be able to watch as Len, a violinist in the competition, actually plucks the strings on his intrument. And you’ll see the pianist, Ryotaro, glides his fingers across his piano. The only issue I had with the art was…I supose one would say color coordination as two (technically three) of the main characters have green hair, all of the main charactershave really bright colored hair, and the background characters have generic hair coloring. I know the main characters need to stand out, but sometimes there needs to be some kind of balance there so that they don’t just pop out like they do…
Music is not a problem in this series and you may even find yourself recognizing many of the pieces the characters play throught the show. Even if you’ve never been interested in classical music there is so much passion invoked into the preformances that you can actually pick up on emotions via the pieces that the characters play. The only downfall is that beyond classical pieces the other pieces seem repetitive and not very special. The opening and the ending grow bothersome after a while as well and I found myself mildly annoyed after watching one episode after another and immediately went to skip the opening after the first two episodes. The songs are not ones that make you want to play them over and over again. They’re not bad either, just not outstanding.
Since this anime is technically a reverse harem show (one girl, many guys (save for the clarinet player who is also a girl)) the guys all follow a pattern of character personalities and fit into a certain stereotype. Even so, I found that a lot of the characters, though stereotypical, were able to pull it off without coming off as too generic. There are five boys that are considered potential love interests for Hino and they’re all so charming in their own respect that it’s really hard to decide who to root for when Hino is one on one with any guy. A problem, however, is that this anime is based off of a dating sim game, and it comes over quite obvious whenever a ‘moment’ happens between Hino and one of the main characters. It kind of gives the show an over dramatic flair and there’s real confusion as to whom Kahoko really likes as she has moments with all of the male leads.
As a whole, however the series is very enjoyable. It’s funny as well as cute, and you can honestly learn a lot from it. Especially with Lilli’s One Point Classic, a little trivia segment that comes on just before the previews where Lilli gives you little facts and tidbits about music in general. You’ll find that you come out of La Corda D’Oro with a new viewpoint, a feeling of contentment, and knowledge of stuff you never knew you needed to know.
I would recommend this series to music lovers as well as non-music lovers. If you like any kind of romance than this series is totally for you. La Corda D’Oro will not disappoint!

Naruto. ahhh, dear dear naruto. first taste of this makes you want more if you’re de action type of anime watcher. :) the thing about naruto is that you should 1st see the 1st season to get to know the characters, whats this, who’s who, where’s what, and at least remember the jutsus, and power stuffs. 2 words: 1st SEASON.
anyways, the 1st episode of naruto shippuden was abt the time for naruto to go back to his hometown, where he unites back with Haruno Sakura, his team mate, newcomer Sai and Kakashi Sensei, his teacher. ( you whould want to keep an eye on Sai, cause he is like a person. I don’t know! curious? watch the episode. :) )
wells, even though I’ve only watched this til episode 98 (lag. blame LAG. D:), its actually enough for me to write a review. ever since Sasuke’s dissapearance to Orochimaru, Naruto still verges to train and try at least, talk to Sasuke.
Naruto is a stubborn, hot-head, over-confident-never-will-I-give ninja. in the 1st season, a demon nine tailed fox once came to Konoha to well, attack the village. ( what else do monsters and demons do right? -.-) while the whole village is fighting the damn demon, the 4th Hokage, which is like a king to konoha, summons a frog and seals the demon nine tailed fox into Naruto. He was just a baby back then, so basically, he doesn’t know whats going on. Naruto had no parents, according to how much I know, that is.

DISADVANTAGE::Naruto was detested and despised by his fellow konoha villagers, bcause the demon is in him, ( you can see why he dreams to be a Hokage) and so the villagers deserted him and told their children not to hang with him, so as you can see, he is a lonely person.
ADVANTAGES::On the bright side, you do not wana get on Naruto’s bad side. o.o you see, de demon is able to help and transfer his power and energy to naruto, which makes him of course, powerful.
Naruto Shippuden is mostly about friendship, not giving up, power. sorry lovehearts ppl, but this is not abt love. o.o this is really a great anime so the rating is quite good. hope I’ll find the time to see more of the episodes though, coz my computer is born with lagness. =.=
until den,
Ting.

Amazing. Just… amazing. I have to say I am quite touched by this anime, as it is so rare to find truely stunning shows in this day and age. I felt the slightest bit worried at the start that this show would turn in to the cliche of angst and betrayal that usually surrounds series with a dark undertone, but it certainly did not. From start to finish, and anime remained true, and and questions I thought may be left un answered were wrapped up nicely. Though perhaps there are a few more things I would have like to know at the end, they can hardly be considered plot holes or loose ends.
I gave the story an 8 out of 10 purely because it didn’t matter to me. I was far more interested in the art, sound and character development. On a whole, the story is fairly good, with some nice twists and turns along the way. It’s easy to take in and, as long as you watch the series from start to finish, hard to become confused.
I also gave the art an 8. It was not the best looking I’ve ever seen, but that in know way, shape or form means that it was bad. It was well drawn, with a fair amount of interest devoted to the detals and backgrounds. I’m hoping that animation falls under art as well, because I was please with that on a whole. I noticed no flaws in the animation, though I was not looking as a critic but as a fan, which may have led me to over-look a few things.
The sounds were fantastic. I gave them a 10. Actually, the sound was probably the thing I enjoyed the most about the show. Even the foot-steps were beautifully recorded, and they sounded very life-like. The sounds horses made were great too, and I think the voices of all the characters fit their appearance and personality perfectly.
I gave the character a 9. Now, you may think I am being quite easy-handed with these high ratings, but I really did enjoy the character development and the characters as a whole. They interacted and grew with each other perfectly, making the show work that much better. Every conversation had meaning, every argument was intense, every taunt blood thirsty and most jokes quite funny. Some characters developed perfectly, while others failed to learn from their mistakes. I enjoyed watching Ciel realize what was important to him, and what made him do the things he did.
For enjoyment, I gave the show an 8. The factors that I considered a plus were the sound and the character development, and the factor that brought down the show for me was probably the lack of plot that acted like a back-bone. Each episode was like a new plot within a plot, which is quite hard to pull off, but it tends to draw away from the over-all problem.
Of course, this factor did not, obviously, deter me from enjoying the series, and I am stunned that such a find was just waiting for me. This is why I gave the over-all enjoyment an 8. Trust me, that ranks pretty good, and there aren’t many series I would give anything higher than a 7.
I wish I could have watched Kuroshitsuji each week as it came out, but the idea lodged in my mind that new shows must be bad would not allow me to swallow my pride and watch. After hearing people talk about the show, I decided that I just HAD to watch it. And I have to say, I’m extremely glad I that I did, and I recommend that you too watch it. It certainly is no waste of time. Please excuse any and all spelling/grammatical errors.

you so want to give Lovely Complex a LOVELY 10 out of 10 once you’ve seen this anime. :D one of my favourite love stories. the story is sweet, cute and most of all there is HUMOR. the characters are cute, the place and art is cool, wells mostly w\everything about it, I LIKE. :) I really salute the authors, writers and scrip-writers, basically everyone who helped in the making of this outstanding anime. :)

okay enough of my blabber. so. this anime, even in the smallest bit of humor, makes you L.O.L.L.A.A.. Laugh Out Loud Like An Alien. :) this is abt high-school soon to bcum sweethearts-lovers, Koizumi Risa and Atsushi Otani who are physically OPPOSITES. Risa is a very tall high school student, abt 170cm, who could be a basketball star, while Otani is only a nice 156cm, who can be called, well, midget, puny, but no. :) HE is the BASKETBALL STAR! seriously, this tiny dude can play like hell. :P

It’s not often that an anime like this comes along. Practically everything about this anime except the artwork is absolutely the best. The characters give you a lot to like about them, despite all their quirks. In fact, it’s their quirkyness that makes them so endearing. From Sawako’s dress-up fetish to Tsumugi’s belief about Mio and Ritsu to Asuza, each one of them is endearing. Plotwise, there was nothing I found hard to swallow, other than Sawako being able to make so many costumes in a short time (she comes in with some lavish costumes sometimes.) However, that’s easily overlooked when it’s a comedy that makes one laugh this much.

Soundwise, I was blown away by everything. Seiyuu did a wonderful job, especially with the music. “Cagayake Girls” (the opening theme; I’ve also seen it transliterated as “Kagayake Girls”; loosely translated, it means “Sparkling Girls”) is a wonderfully done piece and definitely worth hunting the MP3 down. So is “Don’t Say “Lazy”” (The ending theme.) Most of the other tunes are just as enjoyable (such as Sweet Bitter Beauty Song and Fuwa Fuwa Time; the later loosely translates as “Fluffy/Airy Time.”)

About the only problem is the artwork. In places, it looks like they concentrated to much on the character’s appearances and neglected the background a bit. However, that’s all that’s wrong with it. However, the characters themselves are well-done. (I’m seeing a lot of fan art cropping up online, especially of Mio.)

Unfortunately, this anime, I fear, may be doomed to obscurity. I’ve tried spreading the word around about it and people keep concluding “Oh, this is a crappy Lucky Star rip-off.” or “Oh, this is a crappy Azumanga Daioh rip-off.” IT IS NOT A RIP-OFF. I really wish people would stop comparing every all-female school anime to Azumanga Daioh. It’s annoying.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, this series is a do over of the previous one, not a sequal the previous one only followed the manga roughly and came up with its own ending as the manga was nowhere near finished at the time.

This time round the writers are following the manga as closely as possible, I was mildly dissapointed with the original so when I saw and heard about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood I was intrigiued, so far it has yet to disappoint, I never realised how much was left out of the old show and am really excited to see where this one will go next.

Animation wise it is close enough to the old show to not put anyone off, while being different enough to not feel like your watching the same program. I was hooked after the first episode and have been avidly watching ever since. The characters are strong, from the serious Al to the gorgeous yet fiery Winrey and the story while being fairly serious contains enough humour to stop it from being depressing, it is a very well balanced show and well worth your time. I would recommend this show to anyone who likes anime and who liked the manga or just likes good TV!
